okay – another cat post
Skipper is skipping through life now!

Skipper is an older sheltie mix who was left in a crate on the driveway at Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue with a note attached: “Daddy wants to shoot Skipper because his teeth are falling out.”? Well, 8 year old Skipper’s luck has turned around. When he came into Pet Haven’s foster program he went straight to the vet and had his teeth taken care of … then he got to hang out at one of our doggie daycare partners, Auntie Ruth, for the weekend in the convalescence room where he had a chance to recover from his surgery. He was definitely pampered there … until he moved to a foster home. Skipper is being fostered by Pet Haven’s Fall Benefit coordinator … so on Sunday when we met for our committee meeting, guess who got to come along??? Yes, Skipper told his foster there’s no way he’s skipping a chance to be the center of attention and to help in the planning of Pet Haven’s Fall Benefit.
As you can see from the photo on the right, he was an active contributor to our meeting, and we very much appreciated it!
Skipper’s full story with lots of great photos are posted on the Red Lake Rosie’s blog. Click here to check it out!

cat goes up. cat goes down.
Okay, I know, you’ve probably seen this already, but just in case you haven’t:
At time of this writing 27 countries’ cat-ladders were represented. And you know what really made me say “Whoa, Eureka”? The friendly host has amassed a number of links showing further catladders. Take the German CatStep, or maybe you want to buy a Kitty Cat Loft.
Elsewhere on the web that I found all by myself, here’s “the cat ladder I made for Brian’s cats,” with a handy link to aforesaid Brian’s cats. And another cat ladder. And “making an IKEA cat ladder” (”My cats are bored.”)
Why should there be any area of your house your cat can’t access? Don’t answer that.

A Flurry of Information
As more and more pet owners pamper their pets and try to avoid the “commercial products,” more and more smaller companies are turning towards internet/blog marketing then ever. Over the last few months, I have gotten more emails and questions from small companies telling me about their products in the last few months then I have gotten since I’ve started this blog.
Maybe I’m just becoming more popular on the web (I doubt it!) or companies are just becoming more grassroots in the way they promote their items.
My biggest issue, of course, is what to believe. It is so difficult for a company to convince someone that they need this product over the products they currently use…especially if the products a consumer currently uses is working for that person.
I read all the emails I get, and try to pass on the ones that look legit, but my I think my dogs are enjoying the products they have and aren’t looking to be test animals for my blog. But, at the same time, you never know where that one great product will come around!

So cute "Solo"
thug life, with cats
I often mention here my great fondness for Jorge Luis Borges (Argentinean writer, d. 1986). To this day I am constantly finding something of his I haven’t read yet. A couple of days ago it was his A Universal History of Iniquity. (Translated by Andrew Hurley for Penguin Books, 2001.)
An elegant collection of evildoers across the world and the centuries, this collection includes the essay “Monk Eastman, Purveyor of Iniquities.” Apparently the rough crew in the gangs of turn of the 20th century New York included this gent, of whom Borges notes that he started a pet shop at age 19 with his father’s backing, and later in life another as a front (for more nefarious business) full of hundreds of pigeons and cats.
“He loved every one of the creatures,” Borges wrote, “and would often stroll through the streets of the neighborhood with one purring cat on his arm and others trailing ambitiously in his wake.”
Seriously? Perhaps this was another of Borges’ creations? (My favorite of which was the Zahir.)
No, as it happens, there sure as shooting was a Monk Eastman, he was a premier thug in the Gangs of New York, and he did love his birds and cats something fierce. For the primary scholarship on that see this page of Herbert Asbury’s The Gangs of New York (you should get page 256, via Google Books).
And for a special opportunity, if you’d like to read an academic essay on this Borges essay including a reference to Monk Eastman, try this. (It’s published through the Borges Center at the University of Pittsburgh.)
