From an 1863 Spanish/English dictionary compiled by Mariano Velázquez de la Cadena:

CANINAME’N’TE, can-in-ahmen’-tay, ad. In a passionate, snarling manner; like a dog.

Which was cheek by jowl with the following useful but not at all romantic term:

CANINE’KO, can-tn-tr’-o, tm. One who gathers the excrements of dogs for the use of tan-yards.

What a difference a year makes

About a year ago Pet Haven took 3 very small kittens from an impound facility in the twin cities. 3 kittens were found in a garage, the mother had given birth there. The 4th one arrived several weeks later.

All weighed under 1.5 pounds and were thin and scrawny – and afraid of us. The man who owned the garage was going to live trap the mother so she could be spayed and he would return her to the neighborhood and continue to provide food, water and shelter for her.

The kittens were a project, a couple had infections that took some time to clear up, the runt, who was definitely in the worst condition, did not survive although we struggled for weeks. All were black with medium length fur although now that their coats are fully grown in, we realize they are long haired.

Dot, Denny and Duke have all been adopted and we have recent photos of Duke, now named Tsahim which we are told means fearless in Mongolian.

Tsahim resides with a dog, Monty, and loves him dearly. And he has turned into a large boy! 17 pounds and counting. The vet feels he is not overweight but should be close to 20 pounds when he is through growing!

All turned into charming, people loving kittens.

Adopted Dog Update: Izzy

I adopted Izzy the yellow lab from Pet Haven one year ago on 7/11/09. I could see right away how sweet she was and I fell in love with her the very moment that we met. When I brought her home she was afraid of quite a few things. One of her biggest fears was getting into my van, she would put her brakes on and totally refuse to take a step toward my van door. She had to be lifted into the van each time it was time to go anywhere. With much patience and encouragement she gets in with much
ease now. She now goes for rides and sticks her head out the window to see and smell everything.

    Izzy is loved by all my friends and family members as she is sweet and so laid back. She seems to think that everyone likes her and wants them to pet her. I think that she is pretty close to being correct!

    Izzy has graduated from TCOTC Twin Cities Obedience Training Club level one and will attend level two soon. She did very well and learned so much.

She now walks, listens and obeys so much easier. I am very proud of her as she continues to learn and grow.

Scooby, where are you….?!

In his new home, that’s where!!!

Prince Scooby III, the sheltie, came into Pet Haven earlier this month from People For Pets in Spencer, Iowa and it didn’t take long for someone to claim this royalty.

Scooby is pictured above sitting in his foster mom’s lap with his new mom Jane and Golden Retriever brother Luke. Missing from the photo is cat sister, Lola. With all that fur, this family should have an easy time staying warm this winter! I just hope Jane has herself a good swiffer….

Many thanks to Barbara for fostering Scooby…we’re happy he found himself a family worthy of this prince’s love!! We wish you well Scooby, Jane, Luke and Lola!!

Quick! What’s this cat feeling? Is it anticipation? Wonder? Panic, pleasure, rage? Contempt? (Since this is Elizabeth, it might very well be that last one.) What would you say if I told you that your answer would help provide data for a British university’s research into “positive uses of online social media”?

If your answer is, like mine, “No way. That sounds way too fun,” then let me point you over to tagPuss. See a kitty, pick an emotion, tag it with the round paw button, and see what other people said (the most popular response, I gather, being the largest font). This nifty yet helpful diversion comes courtesy of The Lincoln Social Computing Research Group (LiSC) at the University of Lincoln. They’re hoping to gather information on how people interpret cats’ emotions.

I imagine the purpose is similar to another research project they undertook, in which a group attempted to pick out what exactly makes human/dog interaction so enjoyable in order to bring more of that pleasantness to the human/computer experience. Seriously. It’s on this page. Now that’s food for thought, isn’t it? If my computer was cute, fluffy, and made nice noises when I used it, would that make my working life better?

And for Pete’s sake, what’s up with that cat?
